Docking at Green Land : Nature and its healing powers

AND INTO THE FOREST I GO, TO LOSE MY MIND AND FIND MY SOUL.

— JOHN MUIR

Nature is resilient, ever-adapting, and never in a rush. All its elements have a purpose and everything is intentional. Surrounded by flora and fauna, we can learn a great deal about patience, mindfulness, and balance. Yet, even more importantly, Mother Nature is where we come from and where we are going in the end so really it is our primary home.

What’s more, nature has healing powers. Did you know that, according to scientific research, a 90-minute walk in a natural environment can reduce activity in a brain region linked to a significant factor in depression? And only 20 minutes in nature can significantly lower your stress hormone levels.

No wonder Shinrin-yoku is so beneficial to our mental health. This Japanese practice known as ‘forest bathing’ means immersing oneself in a forest to promote relaxation and well-being. It’s the most natural way there is to heal.

Whenever you take a land break in your sea voyage, make it a green one. Go for a hike in the forest, take a walk in the park, hug a tree, or start a vegetable garden. Your mind and heart will thank you for it almost instantly. Go outdoors to go outside the predictability.

And here’s an idea: why don’t you take map your happiness journal with you into the wild?

Meet up with Mother Nature for a chat and write all about it:

What can you see? What can you hear?
Do you feel the greenery is working its magic within you?
